Tianhe revitalizes Cantonese Opera through community engagement, education
Tianhe has been actively preserving and promoting Cantonese Opera, a captivating art form cherished in Cantonese-speaking parts of China, including Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, by integrating it into modern urban life.
Cantonese Opera was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
Collaborating with the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Theater, Tianhe has established eight centers for learning and promoting the art form, hosted nearly 30 educational sessions and performances and more than 10 study tours, benefiting over 20,000 local residents.

In Tianhe, Cantonese Opera is increasingly woven into daily life and local festivities. Events such as the special performances organized during the Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival have drawn broad participation. Additionally, the district has introduced Cantonese Opera to traditional celebrations, such as the Dragon Boat Festival, enhancing community engagement.
Focusing on young people, the district has implemented the "Colorful Intangible Cultural Heritage in Schools" brand program, involving students from multiple schools in immersive Cantonese Opera activities. This initiative has led to 14 schools being recognized as municipal-level bases for promoting this prized form of intangible cultural heritage.
Furthermore, Tianhe is innovating with "theater+" models, integrating opera with tourism and commerce. This approach, highlighted by international participation in immersive experiences, underscores the district's commitment to integrating cultural heritage with urban development.
