Cafes emerge as dynamic '3rd spaces' in Tianhe
In Tianhe, 743 coffee shops densely located in commercial areas offer more than just high-quality coffee; they are transforming into vibrant "third spaces" that provide a comfortable and relaxing environment for local residents.
The term "third place" was coined by the sociologist Ray Oldenburg from the United States in his book The Great Good Place. It describes spaces that are neither home (first place) nor work (second place) but are essential for community building, social interaction and a sense of belonging.
Cafes in Tianhe are becoming essential urban buffers distinct from home and office. For example, on weekdays during office hours, the cafe located on the basement level of Buynow Plaza has an 80 percent occupancy rate, with one-third of the tables occupied by laptops or tablets. Mr Jiang, an electronics sales professional, frequently uses cafes for meetings, while media worker Ms Bai appreciates the focus and creativity sparked by the lively yet private atmosphere.
Cafe owners in Tianhe are equally focused on space design. U Cafe, located near the Tianhe Wetland Park in Tianhe Smart City, integrates art and nature, creating a serene environment. Similarly, Laihui Coffee offers an open, minimalist design, ensuring a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.
These cafes reflect a shift from merely serving coffee to enhancing customer experiences, mirroring Tianhe's vibrant commercial and entrepreneurial ecosystem.
