Tianhe cultural parade fetes birthday of sea goddess Mazu
Shibei village in Tianhe hosted a cultural parade on May 9 to celebrate the 1,066th birthday of the deity Mazu, blending century-old customs with urban development and cultural revitalization.

The revered sea goddess's birthday is observed annually on the 23rd day of the third month in Chinese calendar. The celebration of Mazu's birthday in Shibei village was recognized as a district-level intangible cultural heritage in 2024. This event, a symbol of the village's 750-year history, reflects the villagers' aspirations for harmony and prosperity.
The parade began at 8:30 am on Chaoyang East Street, featuring 16 vibrant performance groups. Highlights included colorful dragons from the village's primary school, powerful lion dance teams, and a captivating Cantonese Opera troupe.
Notably, the local "Piaose" float, performed by children in the village, made its debut, showcasing the village's cultural confidence.

Recent urban renewal initiatives have transformed Shibei village, enhancing livability and preserving its cultural heritage. Local residents said that events like this parade strengthen community identity and attract investment, contributing to economic growth.
