Established in October 1984, the Environmental Horticulture Research Institute is one of the earliest provincial-level institutions specializing in flower research in China.

It has developed 280 new flower varieties with independent intellectual property rights – including 117 registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in the United Kingdom and 103 flower varieties that have passed Guangdong's very exacting crop variety appraisal.
