Tianhe Stadium completed its renovation and upgrading in April, right on time to welcome the 2023 Guangzhou Open Track and Field Relay, which will be held from May 13 to 14.

The 2023 Guangzhou Open Track and Field Relay will be the first competition in the stadium after its renovations and upgrading.

Renovations began in November 2021, and included runway and lighting upgrades, fire-fighting facility rectifications, comprehensive maintenance work, and the addition of a waterproof platform on the second floor.

The stadium now has more than 100 sets of professional lighting equipment that meet the lighting requirements set by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

Tianhe Stadium was first built on Aug 30, 1987. It has since been renovated three times, in 2001, 2009 and 2018.
