The Guangdong Provincial People's Government recently gave awards to the units and individuals that won awards at the 23rd China Patent Awards in 2022. Guangzhou's Tianhe district had nine patents win China Patent Awards, nine patents win the 9th Guangdong Patent Awards, and two individuals win Guangdong Outstanding Inventor Awards.

Tianhe has been making use of the intellectual property (IP) preferential policies to guide and stimulate patent creation, with a total of 10.42 million yuan ($1.45 million) of funds having been disbursed.

It has also facilitated the procedures of applying for the policies. A total of 2,233 projects applying for patent authorization and trademark registration subsidies, high-value patent and trademark cultivation subsidies, and IP financing, were handled and examined, with a funding amount of 5.71 million yuan awarded.

The district was selected as a national IP county project pilot area in August, which is expected to boost the further agglomeration of scientific innovation and high-end services. The International Guangzhou Science and Technology Achievement Transformation Tianhe Base was put into operation in 2020. It has since introduced and incubated 30 key scientific achievements transformation projects, explored 751 technical needs of enterprises, as well as realized intended signing agreements valued at 103.4 million yuan.

Measures like carrying out IP pledge financing activities were also taken by Tianhe to help solve the problems of financing difficulty. By September 2022, a total of 1.21 billion yuan of IP pledge financing was completed in the district, including 1.17 billion yuan of patent pledge financing, benefiting 106 enterprises.

As of September 2022, the number of patents granted in Tianhe was 17,190, including 5,517 invention patents, representing a year-on-year increase of 6.5 percent. the number of trademark applications was 64,826, and the number of effective trademark registrations was 495,912.

In the first half of 2022, the number of invention patents per 10,000 people in the district increased by 30.4 from 106.5 in the same period last year to 136.9, 2.4 times Guangzhou's average of 56.2.

Up to now, there are 1,299 enterprises in Tianhe certified by the IP management system, 10 national IP demonstration enterprises, and 30 provincial IP demonstration enterprises.
