Tianhe's GDP expected to exceed 600b yuan in 2021

The second session of the 10th Tianhe District People's Congress kicked off on Jan 21, in which Chen Jianrong, head of the district, delivered a report on the work of the government in 2021.

The district's GDP in 2021 is expected to exceed 600 billion yuan ($94.76 billion), increasing by more than 8 percent year-on-year, said Chen.

It topped the nation in investment competitiveness according to a list released by CCID Consulting. It also ranked second in the top 100 urban areas in 2021 in terms of high-quality development.

Chen added that Tianhe generated 87.92 billion yuan in tax revenue last year, while the general public budget revenue totaled 7.78 billion yuan.

Retail sales of consumer goods in the district in 2021 reached 205.06 billion yuan, up 15.1 percent year on year, and the fixed-asset investment increased by 8.1 percent.

The revenue of software enterprises above designated size is expected to surpass 200 billion yuan, while that of the high-end professional service industry is projected to exceed 100 billion yuan.

There were 164,000 newly established enterprises in Tianhe in 2021, increasing by 37.5 percent and accounting for 35.6 percent of Guangzhou's total. The number of newly added enterprises above designated size in the district was 1,307, up 21.5 percent and making up 17.8 percent of the city's total.

The number of new tech enterprises reached 34,000 in 2021, accounting for 38.2 percent of Guangzhou's total, while that of high-tech enterprises was 2,995, making up 26 percent of the city's total.

In addition, Tianhe Central Business District attracted 11 projects invested in by Fortune Global 500 companies, while Tianhe Intelligence Business District introduced 13 key projects, including one invested in by XPeng Motors, and attracted 34 enterprises with a registered capital of more than 100 million yuan.

The number of granted patents in the district in 2021 was 29,000, ranking first in Guangzhou for the 19th consecutive year. Ten scientific achievements won State Science and Technology Awards, accounting for 45.5 percent of Guangzhou's total.

In 2021, Tianhe completed the transformation of 27 old communities, built two primary schools and six kindergartens, as well as established 113 new private medical institutions, ranking first in Guangzhou.

The district also ranked first in the city in the assessment of the building of the Peaceful China initiative for the seventh consecutive year. It was also awarded the title of demonstration district for the building of the Peaceful China initiative for the 2017-20 period.
