South China Botanical Garden (SCBG) is one of the oldest botany research institutions in China. As a national 4A tourist attraction, SCBG receives over 1 million visitors per year.

As the largest comprehensive garden and one of the top plant germplasm conservation institutions in China, SCBG consists of three divisions:

1. A nursery and exhibition zone, occupying an area of 282 ha, which was designed mainly for plant ex-situ conservation, including 38 special collection gardens such as a magnolia garden and a ginger garden. It is also home to a modern exhibition greenhouse and a science popularization center.

2. A research zone covering an area of 37 ha, it contains a plant science center, an ecology and environmental sciences center, an agricultural and resource plant center and a molecular analysis and genetic improvement center.

3. Dinghushan National Nature Reserve, established in 1956, was the first national nature reserve in China and is the only reserve affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Over 2291 plant species are conserved in an area of 1155 ha.
