Guangzhou Grand Theatre in Tianhe district is hosting a landmark exhibition of ceramic works by the legendary 20th-century artist Pablo Picasso, which marking the first time in 13 years that these masterpieces have been displayed.

Authorized by the Picasso Museum Foundation in France, the exhibition showcases over 30 ceramic pieces created by Picasso between 1946 and 1971. This collection highlights the artist's prolific ceramic work during his later years in southern France, serving as a vital cultural bridge between the East and the West.

Emilio de Miguel Calabia, the Consul General of Spain in Guangzhou, emphasized Picasso's global influence and his role as a cultural icon of Spain. He said that exhibiting these works at Guangzhou's cultural landmark represents a significant opportunity for cultural exchange, deepening artistic connections between Guangzhou and Spain.

Curator and renowned collector Leona Chen highlighted the historical meeting between Chinese painting master Zhang Daqian and Picasso in 1956, which inspired Picasso to incorporate Eastern ink brush techniques into his ceramic creations. Several pieces in this exhibition reflect this influence, showcasing the profound impact of Asian art on Picasso's later style.

The exhibition, running until Jan 24, 2027, offers a unique glimpse into Picasso's relaxed and vibrant creative spirit during his later years, with standout pieces like "Woman with Tousled Hair," previously exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
