Tianhe fosters growth of chemical materials and biotechnology
Tianhe district is forging a unique path by drawing on the information industry to invigorate sectors like chemical materials and biotechnology.
In 2025, the district's strategic emerging industries achieved an added value of nearly 205 billion yuan ($30.5 billion). Among these, the new materials and fine chemicals sector grew 7.1 percent, leading the growth rate among all strategic emerging industries in the district.
Tianhe is developing the "One Valley, One Park" high-end biomedicine and health industry cluster, accelerating the planning and construction of platforms such as Tianhe Life Valley and the 2112 Industrial Park.
Tianhe Life Valley focuses on the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, emphasizing biopharmaceutical research and development, clinical trials, and advanced medical devices to create a complete R&D-pilot-industry chain. Meanwhile, the 2112 Industrial Park centers on smart manufacturing and health, aiming to build an industry cluster worth multi-billion dollars.
The progress owes much to precise government guidance from the district authorities. In terms of academia-industry collaboration, Tianhe facilitates the transition from university labs to industrial applications. Mechanisms like industry-academia-research platforms and technology transformation funds have been instrumental in benefiting local companies.
